Q: What
version of the Excel or Quattro Pro or Microsoft Works/Spreadsheets
do I need?
A: The software is compatable with the 95, 97, 2000, and
more recent versions of Excel, Quattro Pro, and Works/Spreadsheets.
Q: What if I download the
software and it doesn't work on my computer?
A: You can do one of two things, go to www.microsoft.com
or www.corell.com and get a more recent version of Excel or Quattro
Pro (1995 or later), or you can email us for a refund. However,
most computers do come with some type of spreadsheet program, usually
Microsoft Works/Spreadsheets, and you can get to the Works/Spreadsheets

Package Questions
Q: What is the difference
between the Budgeter and the Expense Tracker?
A: The Budgeter is used to do a personal or family budget
and shows you the difference between your budget and actual expenses.
The Expense Tracker is used to just track your expenses, so if you
don't want to budget, you could use this.
Q: Do I need both the Budgeter
and Expense Tracker to do my personal or family finances?
A: No, you only need one of the software packages. However,
many people like to order both in either the Combo or Complete Packages
because then they can see how both software programs work and then
choose the one that they like best.
Q: Will banks and other institutions
take this statement for the calculation of my net worth?
A: The Personal Financial Statement was created from bank
forms and integrates the information that they and other institutions
would request if they were looking at your net worth.
Q: What is the difference
between the this retirement calculator to others out there on the
Internet?
A: While other calculators just multiply your savings by
an average rate of return, this advanced software actually simulates
the real investment market each year until you retire. Using statistical
techniques, the software generates market returns-some years' returns
will be good, while in other years the returns can be negative,
just like real life.
Q: What if my computer seems
to get stuck calculating the cells?
A: Hit the escape key and it should stop. We suggest that
you open the Tools/Options menu, click the Calculation tab, and
select Automatic except tables. This will prevent Excel from rerunning
the simulation everytime you enter a different cell.
Q: How do I run the simulation?
A: Hit the F9 key on your computer. This will cause Excel
to begin simulating random returns over your working life. It is
necessary to hit F9 before continuing to ensure all of the calculations
have been made. Depending on the speed of your computer, this process
may take many minutes (it makes up to 75,000 calculations!) Be patient;
if the mouse pointer is an hourglass or if the status bar in the
lower left corner says "Calculating Cells: 100%" it is
still simulating. If outrageous results are returned, like an expected
value in the billions or trillions when you really shouldn't have
that much, there was a random fluke in the simulation and you need
to rerun it by pressing F9 again.
Q: How did you come up with
the returns rates?
A: The rates of return corresponding to each asset class
are based on historical averages and can be seen on the Returns
Table tab.
Q: What is purpose of the
Loan Calculator?
A: The Loan Calculator can be used to view different options
in calculating a loan. For example, if you have a mortgage on your
home and you'd like to see how much interest you would save if you
paid an extra $100 of principal to your loan each month. This calculator
tells you those types of things.
Q: Can the Loan Calculator
be used for loans other than home mortgages?
A: Yes, the Loan Calculator can be used for all types of
loans from home mortgages to car loans, to business loans.
General
Spreadsheet Questions
Q: How do I customize the
categories to fix my own needs?
A: You can just type in any categories that you would like,
but any time you change categories, you'd have to change them on
each tab, which can be a difficult and time consuming project. We've
designed the software to meet the needs of a broad range of individuals
and families, but if you want different categories, you can change
them yourself, but if it messes up your spreadsheet, we are not
responsible for fixing it. We will email you a new one, but are
not customizing them for people.
Q: What do I do if I'm having
difficulty with the software?
A: When you open the software, you can click on the Intro
tab that gives instructions, tips, and explanations for each category.
The answer you are looking for may be there, and if it's not, you
can email us to ask any questions.
Q: If I try to print the
spreadsheet and it doesn't come out on my page right?
A: The software sheets have been set up to print on one page
per month. If you'd like the print to be larger, then click on "File"
then "Page setup". Then click on the buttom "Adjust
to..." so that the "Fit to page" buttom is not selected.
Then you can adjust it to print larger if you'd like. You can also
change around the margins in this area so that the data will fit
better on your pages. To do this, click on the Margins tab to change
them. You can preview what it would look like if you click File.
Then click Print Preview. If it looks the way you want, click Print.
If the clarity of the printed page isnt very good (especially
in the gray cells), you should print it in a higher quality version.
You can do this by clicking File, then Print, then Properties. And
within that area, you should be able to change around the settings
for your printer to make it come out clearer.
Q: What if I input my information
and there is a bunch of number signs (#######) in the cell?
A: The cell width needs to be widened. It should do this
automatically, but if it doesnt, then you can do it manually
by putting your mouse between the letters at the top of the spreadsheet
and moving the line out. For example, if you want to make column
B wider, then put your mouse on the line between column B and C
and move it to the right and the number signs should become actual
numbers and it should be fixed.
